Sports and games have ever been the cultural heritage of Indian society. Of these games hockey has enjoyed a pride place in the heart of its people. Winning eight times Olympic Gold in hockey seems to be Herculean task which cannot be easily equalled by any other country in near foreseeable future. Although India has won almost all the major international competitions in hockey, it is astonished to learn that India failed to win any hockey title of Commonwealth Games.
In recent past Indian hockey has experienced hazardous turmoil due to prevailed mismanagement in the dissolved Indian Hockey Federation. A ray of hope appeared when Ex-Olympian bound 'Hockey India' was appointed by the Government to deal with the affairs of hockey.
The team management seems to be serious about the performance in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games to be scheduled at New Delhi from October 3 14, 2010. Recently, impressed with the performance of other leading countries, a scientific approach of team building has also been adopted in our country comprising of host of experts of allied sciences. A panel of coaches has also been employed for grooming the players in techno-tactical aspect of the game. It is the very first time
when a trainer has been assigned the responsibility to deal with the specific fitness of
players in addition to psychologist, physiotherapist, dietician etc.
In order to instill confidence and ensure peak performance exactly during the
competition, sufficient match exposure has been provided to the team at International
level. Although numerous leading hockey teams are in fray, the conducive home
environment will most likely contribute and play a decisive role.
