Every individual is influenced by the social patterns of different levels and is moulded by social interaction. Sociology is the science of social groups and a social group is a system of social interactions. An individual is influenced by his family, friends, playmates, institutions and acts according to the environment, and the groups to which he belongs.
Sports is a dynamic social force in our culture. Sports have become an important part of the nations culture throughout the world. It captures newspaper headlines, television screens, earns lot of money, is a consideration in international affairs and has social, political, legal and educational overtones.
Physical education as a part of the school curriculum can play a significant role in the socialisation of individuals. Physical education is based on the accepted social and democratic principles. A sound physical education programme produces desirable qualities of integrity, unselfishness, forgiveness, sense of fairness, co-operation, control of emotions etc. Play ground is the laboratory for developing these social characteristics.
In a play field or in a recreation programme all are equal, whether they are rich or poor. Regardless of education or the social status, the victor is given prominence and due recognition. Every one enjoys equal opportunity of exhibiting his skill and worth. Physical education offers practical education to the masses for living a happy, healthy and rational life.
Physical education and sports play very prominent role in the modern society. They are important to an individual, group, a nation, indeed the world. Sports are very closely related to development of societies. Physical education and sports have enabled people to utilize their leisure time worthy. Participants have to follow strict discipline and obey the decisions as per norms. Towards development of leadership qualities sports and game provide good opportunity. Sportsmanship, fairplay, sacrificing self interest and such ethics are developing through sports and games. Similarly in tackling social problems, adjustment, changing out look and many other societal phenomena can be managed in a better way through sports and games.
