Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow based on your understanding of the passage (Q. 46 50) In India tribal communities have followed the course of a long history to reach the status of present day identity from a simple village to lineage identity. The membership of a village, besides that of a clan, was an important source of identity in the society. Village identity was necessitated in cases of inter-village feuds and, in some tribes, in enhancing one's status by committing acts of valour. New forms of identity emerged gradually through continual interactions with neighbours of either similar cultures or different cultures. These interactions were either in the form of cooperation or conflict. The British through their Policy of divide and rule divided the hill areas of North-east India into two categories based on their levels of development and accessibility. After independence, the Constitution of India also made special provisions for the administration of the Scheduled and Tribal Areas under the Fifth and the Sixth schedule. 46.
