Read the passage below and answer questions (Nos. 19 to 24)
Onam is an annual harvest festival, celebrated mainly in the Indian State of Kerala. Ranging from four days to ten days, all activities during this festivals are centered around worship, music, dance, sports, boat races and good food. Like many other religious festivals in India, Onam is celebrated by people of all religions. Women dress up in new clothes and heavy jewellery and make elaborate and intricate designs of rangolis (with coloured rice paste) and pookkalam (with flowers) in front of their homes. The legendary King Mahabali is welcomed to his kingdom with reverence. Onam or Thiruvonam originated as a joyous annual reminiscence of the golden rule of King Mahabali, a mythical King, who ruled Kerala a long time ago. It recalls the sacrifice of the great King, his true devotion to God, his human pride and his ultimate redemption. Onam welcomes the spirit of a great King, and assures him that his people are happy and wish him well.
Facts and fables blend as Kerala celebrates this royal return, year after year with the festivities of Onam. Legend has it that Gods plotted against Mahabali to end his reign. For this they sent Lord Vishnu to earth in the form of a Brahmin dwarf. But before being trampled down to the netherworld, Vishnu granted the King's sole wish: to visit his land and people once every year.
A flower carpet called Pookkalam is laid in front of every house to welcome the advent of the vanquished king, and earthen mounds representing Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in the dung plastered courtyards. Traditional rituals are performed followed by a lavish feast called Sadhya. Onam also means new clothes for the whole family, sumptuous home cooked delicacies on plantain leaves and the lingering aroma of the payasam. The spectrum of Onam gets its shade of royalty with the regal elephant ride that takes place at Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. Decked in gold, the favourite animal of the royals looks even more magnificent spectacular parades of comparisoned elephants, fire works and the famous Kathakali dance are traditionally associated with Onam. One of the main attractions is the Vallam Kali or boat races. Hundreds of oarsmen row traditional boats to the rhythm of drums and cymbals. It is also the season of many cultural and sport events and carnivals. All this makes Onam time perfect period to visit this coastal State. The beauty of the festival lies in its secular fabric. People of all religions, castes and communities celebrate the festival with equal joy and verve.
