The term is generally used for the Indigenous population of a land. It is also referred to by different terms in different countries, such as; American Indians in USA, First Nations in Canada, Nationalists in China, and Adivasi, Vanvasi, Girijan, Adimjati, Janjati, Anusuchit Janjati (Scheduled Tribe), etc. in India. Besides the above, there are three different concepts of tribe as well, viz. American concept, British concept, and Indian concept. In American Anthropology, the term tribe is perceived as a stage in evolutionary sequence, such as, Band, Tribe, Chiefdom and Kingdom. After Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492, the scramble for exploring new lands and people began in Europe. In addition to the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and Norwegians, the British were one of the most prominent explorers. They entered into the interiors of the Dark Continent of Africa, and also discovered Australia, New .ealand, Tasmania, and hundreds of islands in the Pacific; and thus, established the biggest empire in the world. In so doing, they encountered the indigenous populations of all the newly discovered land and its people. The culture of such indigenous people was in contrast of the British or the Victorian culture. Such people were first called by the British as and thereafter, by 'tribe'. The British also established their colony in India and ruled over the entire subcontinent that had enormous variety of cultures and traditions. Those people, who lived in comparative geographical and social isolation, such as in hills and forests, were referred to as 'tribes' by them. In fact, the British equated such populations of India with the indigenous people of the newly discovered lands. In India, there is yet another category of tribes called Scheduled Tribes. Scheduled Tribes are those socially, economically, and technologically disadvantaged groups, who, by order of the President of the Republic of India, are listed in this category. Because of constitutional privileges and safeguards granted to the scheduled tribes in India, there is fierce political competition and rivalry among different backward and disadvantaged groups for inclusion in the category of Scheduled Tribes. This has greatly affected the socio-political scenario of the country.
71. What has greatly affected the socio-political scenario of the country
Scramble for exploring new lands and people by Europeans.
Constitutional privileges and safeguards granted to the scheduled tribes in the country.
Discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
British Rule in entire Indian sub-continent.
72. What was the result of discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus
Constitutional privileges and safeguards were granted to the scheduled tribes in India.
Scramble for exploring new lands and people by Europeans began.
Dark Continent of Africa remained unexplored forever.
The British equated such populations of India with the Indigenous people.
73. What type of culture did the British explorers find in the newly discovered lands
The Indian Culture.
The European culture.
The culture of the Scheduled Tribes.
Contrast of the British or the Victorian culture.
74. What is the American concept of tribe
It is perceived as a stage in evolutionary sequence from tribe to band to chiefdom to kingdom.
It is perceived in sequence based on their physical stature from Adivasi to Vanvasi to Girijan to Adimjati.
It is a concept that denies the existence of First Nations of Canada and Nationalities of China.
It is exactly the same concept as that of the British.
75. How have the tribesmen lived in India
In complete social and geographical isolation from the mainstream population.
In comparative social and geographical isolation, as compared to the indigenous population of the newly discovered lands by the Europeans
In complete social assimilation with the mainstream population
Practicing agriculture in the plains of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
