(Q. Nos. 71-75)
The first ever systematically organized fieldwork in anthropology was conducted by the members of the Torres Strait Expedition in 1898-99, which was organized by the University of Cambridge. The members of the expedition team included A.C. Haddon, W.H. R. Rivers, C.G. Seligman and others. The everlasting impact of the Torres Strait Expedition in anthropology is that even today widespread use of Genealogical Table Method by social cultural and biological anthropologists both is made in their researches. Franz Boas had though earlier conducted fieldwork among the Eskimos, but then, his background was in Geography. His Eskimo experience disenchanted him from Geography. He was convinced that 'geography alone did not determine culture.' Thereafter, he turned to anthropology and became 'the father, the hero, and the guru' of American Anthropology. Under the leadership of Franz Boas, Margaret Mead did her fieldwork in Samoa Island; and laid down the foundation of Culture and personality School (1928). In United Kingdom, B.K. Malinowski's fieldwork in Trobriand Islands (1913-18) gave rise to the School of Functionalism. A.R. Radcliffe-Brown's work in Andaman Islands (190608) resulted into the emergence of Structure and Function School. The National Character Studies during the Second World War introduced a new methodology in anthropology, known as 'Study of Culture at a Distance.' After the Second World War, the anthropologists realized that neither the 'cultural relativism' of Franz Boas, nor Malinowski's 'empathizing with the natives' could successfully bring 'objectivity' in the discipline. With a view to bring more objectivity and scientism in anthropology, they suggested to examine the working of thought process of man and his mind. They called it 'entering into the head of the native.' This gave rise to the concepts of Symbolic Anthropology, Cognitive Anthropology, Ethno-Science, Ethno-Semantics, Semantic Analysis, Formal Analysis, and likewise, under the rubric of New Ethnography.

(Q. Nos.
