Whether or not the museum is able to provide an education specialist, it is an important part of the work of every museum to establish strong links with its local schools. Someone on the museum staff perhaps the director should have responsibility for maintaining contact with the teachers at local schools. He or she should make sure that the schools know what is going on at the museum and how they can make use of it, and that the museum staff know about developments in the schools.
Unfortunately few teachers learn, as part of their training, about how to use museums in their teaching. Teachers of art or history may be familiar with museums, but teachers of (for example) mathematics or craft and design or languages may need to have the possibilities museums offer presented to them.
Every museum should try to organise perhaps once a year a training day for teachers. Ideally, this would be arranged through the local Schools Service, and the teachers be given time off to attend. It should be held at the museum, and might be led by a museum education specialist brought in for the day. However, all the museum staff should be involved, because museum staff and teachers getting to know each other will be a major benefit of the day. The day must be carefully planned, especially if it involves some real teaching of real children
