Read the following passage and answer the following questions (186 on it.
It is perhaps no accident that many ofthe outstanding figures of the past were exceptionally versatile men. Right up until comparatively recent times, it was possible for an intelligent person to acquaint himself with almost every branch of knowledge. Thus men of genius like Leonardo da Vinci or Philip Sidney, engaged in many careers at once as a matter of course. Da Vinci was so busy with his generous inventions, that he barely found the time to complete his paintings. Sidney, who died in battle when he was only thirty-two years old was not only a great soldier, but a brilliant scholar and poet as well. Both these men came very near to fulfilling the Renaissance ideal of the 'universal the man who was proficient at everything. Today we rarely if every hear that a musician has just invented a new type of submarine. Knowledge has become divided and sub-divided into countless narrowly defined compartments. The specialist is venerated. The versatile person, far from being admired, is more often regarded with suspicion. The modern world is a world of highly-skilled 'experts' who have had to devote the greater part of their lives to a very limited field of study in order to compare with their fellows. With this high degree of specialization the frontiers of knowledge are steadily being pushed back more rapidly than ever before. But this has not been achieved without considerable cost. The scientist, who outside his own particular subject is little more than a moron, is a modern phenomenon as is the man of letters who is barely aware of the tremendous strides that have been made in technology. Similarly, specialization has indirectly affected quite ordinary people in every walk of life. Many activities which were once pursued for their own sake, are often given up in despair; they require techniques, the experts tell us, which take a lifetime to master. Why learn to play piano, when you can listen to the world's greatest pianist in your own drawing room? Little by little, we are becoming more and more isolated from each other. It is almost impossible to talk to your neighbour about his job, even if he is engaged in roughly the same work as you are. The Royal Society in Britain includes, among its members only the most eminent scientists in the country. Yet it is highly disconcerting to find that even here, as one of its fellows puts it, at a lecture only 10% of the members can't understand 50% of what is being said.

Read the following passage and answer the following questions (191 on it.
Left-handed persons can do certain things better that those who are right-handed. They generally find it more difficult to learn languages and mathematics, but have an advantage when it comes to music or sports. Recent research shows that the reason for left or right-handedness and the qualities that go with each of these may be in differences in the construction of the brain.
The human brain is spherical (like a ball). It is divided into two halves called the two hemispheres. The right hemisphere controls the working of the left side of the body while the left hemisphere controls the working of the right side. Furthermore, each hemisphere controls certain kinds of mental activity. In most people reasoning or logical thinking and the learning of mathematics and languages are controlled by the left hemisphere while abilities in the arts and crafts and in music, dance and sports are controlled by the right hemisphere.
Though the two hemispheres are joined together, they seem to work independently. In the majority of cases the left hemisphere dominates over the right, resulting in right-handed people who are better at mathematics and languages than at music and sports. In 65 per cent of the brains studied it was found that the left hemisphere was larger and more highly developed than the right. In 14 per cent of the cases thE' two hemispheres were more or less equal. In 11 per cent the right hemisphere was the more developed of the two.
The difference between the two hemispheres of the herain is present even in the embryo right from its earliest stages. This seems to be a characteristic of the human race as well as of the higher apes such as gorillas. Most gorillas are right-handed, as is seen from the way in which they beat their chests. Lower animals like cats do not show any difference in size or development between the two hemispheres of the brain.
191. What, according to the passage, is the reason for being left-handed or right-handed?
Working of the brain Spherical shape of the brain
Construction of the brain Man's similarity with gorillas and cats
192. In what abilities are right-handed people better?

193. What is a characteristic of the human race and that of the gorillas?
Beating their chest Presence of embryo
Difference in the two hemispheres DE,velopment of the brain
194. How is the working of the human body controlled?
By spherical shape of brain By logical thinking
By kinds of mental activity By two hemispheres of the brain
195. How do animals like cats differ from the human race and gorillas?
There is no difference in size between the two hemispheres of their brain
They are better at dancing and sports
They do not beat their chest
Embryo is present in them right from earliest stages
Read the following passage and answer the following questions (196 on it. Acid rain is not a new phenomenon. It was noticed as early as 1872 by an English chemist. We have done little to control it. And it has got worse. Acid rain occurs when we send
polluting chemicals up into the atmosphere in many different ways, for example, by burning fossil fuels like coal and oil in power plants. The smoke has huge amounts of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. So do emissions from factories and car engines. And if you consider the millions of cars on the roads of the world, the thousands of industries and power plants, you can imagine the extent of the pollution.
When these pollutants reach the atmosphere, they combine with existing water-vapour, oxygen and sunlight. The reaction creates a diluted of highly dangerous sulphuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids. Acid rain affects everything it falls on. The water in rivers and lakes turn acidic. For instance, in Sweden 4,000 lakes have been so severely affected that no fish has survived. Acid rain also changes the soil nutrient content. It washes or leaches away nutrients like potassium, calcium and magnesium from the upper layer that help trees grow. Acid rain kills large stretches of forests, leaving behind leafless skeletons of trees. In Switzerland, 43 per cent of the conifer trees in the Central Alpine region are either dead or dying. In the temperate zone, with its single species, the effect is generally more noticeable than in tropical areas. When forests begin to die, the animals and birds in those forests follow. Among the growing list of species threatened by acid rain are the Pied Fly-catcher and Apollo Butterfly in Sweden. The Dipper fish has vanished from the rivers of Central Wales, and the Brown Trout from Norwegian lakes. The list goes on.
