Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. Choose the nearest answer.
Several times in the history of the world particular countries and cities, or even small groups of people, have attained a high degree of civilization. Yet none of these civilizations, important as they were, have lasted, and one of the reasons why they did not last was that they were confined to a very few people. They were like little oases of civilization in deserts of barbarism. Now it is no good being Civilized if everybody round about you is barbarous, or rather, it is some good, but it is very risky. For the barbarians are always liable to break in on you, and with their greater numbers and rude vigour scatter your civilization to the winds. Over and over again in history comparatively civilized peoples dwelling in cities have been conquered in this way by barbarians coming down from the hills and burning and killing and destroying whatever they found in the plains. In the thirteenth century most of Europe was overrun in this way by the Mongols from Central Asia, and such civilization as then existed was nearly destroyed. Thus any people which has advanced in civilization too far beyond its neighbours has always been liable to be set upon and pulled back by the others, just as, if you build a high tower without proper supports, it is always liable to fall down to the level of the lower buildings round about it.
Now one of the noticeable things about modern civilization, which is also one of the reasons why it is likely to outlast the others, is that it is more or less free from this particular danger. And it is free from it, because it is far less local and far more widespread than the others; so widespread, indeed, that it already covers a large part of the earth.
91. Why did the older civilization not last?
Because they were highly civilized.
Because the people felt they were very important.
Because they were confined to a very few people.
Because the author thinks so.
92. To what does the author compare them?
The author compares them with large civilization.
The author compares them with advanced cities.
The author compares them with imaginary world.
The author compares them with little oases of civilization in deserts of barbarism.
93. What do the barbarians coming down from the hills do
The barbarians are very playful.
The barbarians are always very helpful and friendly.
The barbarians are burning and killing and destroying whatever found in the plains. .
The barbarians helped them build great civilizations.
94. What happened in the thirteenth century
In the thirteenth century Europe was flourishing.
In the thirteenth century most ofEurope was overrun by the Mongols from Central Asia and such civilization as then existed was nearly destroyed.
In the thirteenth century Europe was built by the Mongols from Central Asia.
InthethirteenthcenturymostofEuropewasflourishingbecauseofMongols from Central Asia.
95. Why is the modern civilization free from this danger of destruction?
Because it is very advanced.
Because it is more noticeable than others.
Because it is more advanced than its neighbours.
Because it is far less local and far more wide spread than the others, so wide spread indeed, that it already covers a large part of the earth.
Read the following passage and answer the questions given below: (Choose the nearest answer.) As my health and strength returned, I started to provide myself with every thing that I wanted, andmakemywayoflivingasregularasIcould. From the 4thofJulytothe 14th, I was chiefly busy with walking about with my gun in my hand, a little and a little at a time, like a man who was gathering up his strength after an illness. I learnt this also, in particular, that being out of my shelter in the rain was the most dangerous thing to my health that could be, especially in those rains which came together with storms and strong winds.
I had been now in this unhappy island more than ten months; all possibility of deliverance from this condition seemed to be entirely taken from me and I firmly believed that no human shape had ever set foot upon that place. Having now made my home suitable for my needs, I had a great desire to discover more parts of the island, and to see what other productions I might find, which I knew nothing of yet.
It was the 15th of July when I began to make a more particular examination of the island itself. First I went up the river-mouth where I had come on shore. On the banks of this water I found many pleasant fields, plain, smooth and covered with grass; and on the rising parts of them, next to the higher ground, I found a great deal of tobacco, green and growing very tall. There were various other plants which I did not recognize or understand.
96. What did the author do after recovering his health?
He sat in his cottage.
He started driving around the island.
He started to provide himself with everything that would make his living regular.
He started going out for long walks.
97. What was the most dangerous thing to his health?
That he began lazing in his shelter.
That being busy walking about with his gun.
That walking about a little, and a little at a time.
That being out of his shelter in the rain was the most dangerous, especIally in those rains which came together with storm and strong winds.
98. How long had the author been on the island?
He had been on the island for exactly three months.
He had been on the island for less than six months.
He had been on the island for more than ten months.
He had been on the island for about eight months.
99. What did he wish to do after having made a suitable home for himself?
He had a desire to discover more parts of the island and see what other productions he might find which he knew nothing of yet.
He wanted to relax and enjoy himself.
He had a longing to leave the island.
He had no wish to see anything else on the island.
100. What did he discover on the banks of the water?
He found beautiful fruit trees.
He found unpleasant jungle.
He found pleasant fields, plains, smooth grass and great deal of tobacco.
He found shrubs and bushes and rocky shores.
