The impact of plant and animal domestication was most profound in those neolithic populations that had long ago discontinued fulltime hunting and foraging practices. This phenomenon is explicit in the archaeological record and implicit with respect to ecological changes in the landscape as a consequence of deforestation and exploitation of fields for cultivation and grazing lands. However, an even greater effect can be discerned in the records of skeletal biology where the anthropologist is able to document the biological cost of the socioeconomic transition to full-time food production by observing markers of muscular-skeletal stress, pathology, trauma and differentials of patterns of growth and development from bones and teeth preserved in neolithic burial sites. From these data are evoked new responses to venerable theories about "neolithic races" in the context of looking to dramatic demographic events for an explanation of cultural changes in given regions.
