A fortified and planned pre-Indus settlement with an extensive range of pottery was found in the western sector of the Kalibangan site almost immediately after the excavations began. Equally interestingly, the pottery identified by A. Ghosh at sites like Sothi, which were explored by him earlier in the Ghaggar valley, was found to match the pottery from pre-Indus Kalibangan. On this basis and also on the basis of the parallels he sought for the pottery of pre-Indus Kalibangan in the corresponding levels of Kot Diji, Harappa, and several Baluchistan sites, Ghosh postulated a firm Sothi substratum in the make-up of the Indus civilization. He thought that there was 'every justification for regarding the Sothi as 'proto-Harappan'. Two years later,
W.A. Fairservis wrote that the area along the Southern border of the Kachi plain and the foothills of the Kirthar range could have an Early Harappan level the direct line to the so-called mature or urbanized phase of that culture.' This, however, did not deter him from claiming that the 'elaboration' of the Harappan civilization was due to Mesopotamian contact, although it could be said to have achieved its characteristic style indigenously. In about the same period B. and F.R. Allchin wrote that large if not a major element in the Harappan civilization must derive from pre-Harappan culture of the Indus valley itself.'
