Question Paper
The corridor passes southwards into Karnataka. Here the earliest settlements seem to have been associated with a group of pastoralists who appear in the area early in the third millennium B.C., although no settlements as such are known before the end of the millennium.
What is striking about the culture of the earliest settlements of the southern Deccan is their apparently independent ancestry. There is an extraordinary continuity linking even the earliest settlements with the whole subsequent pattern of life. It is still not possible to decide whether this culture arose in response to some external stimulus, and if so from what direction it came. The indications are that there was a strongly indigenous flavour from the start. It has been suggested that the Indian humped cattle were domesticated locally in the peninsula, and certainly they had already achieved a dominant economic position in the earliest settlements of the Deccan. A range of food grains was cultivated, some of them almost certainly native to the region. It is interesting to note that local variations in grain utilization at the present day are already reflected during the Neolithic-Chalcolithic period. The house patterns of the earliest settlements, and the general layout of villages can also be found as living elements in the countryside today. The conservatism of material culture continues to exert itself over long periods thus the appearance of iron, which in the north is inferred to have coincided with the introduction of western tool types, such as the shaft-hole axe, in the peninsula witnessed the adaptation of a flat rectangular axe of a type already current in copper and bronze in the Harappan and post-Harappan periods. This type survived in the south until the opening of the Christian era.
