She sub-divides the gender system into gender stratification between male and female members of society and gender roles. Gender equity derives from both these elements of the gender system. This can be evaluated from the perspective of rights social, political and reproductive. Levels of equity in such an evaluation of rights determined the level of gender equity. Thus, it is a value laden concept that begs the question of whose values should be applied. Gender inequity in contemporary societies is a problem. It can be measured through social as well as psychological scales.
Women require autonomy to have better gender equity. Autonomy is defined as "the ability to obtain information and to use it as the basis of making decisions about one's private concerns and those of one's intimates and the degree of women's access to material resources within the family, in the community and in the society at large but we don't necessarily enhance women's autonomy. Autonomy is shaped by traditional factors. Hindu women had more autonomy than Muslim women. Education and employment don't necessarily enhance women's autonomy and the traditional factors conferring status on women remain strong and need to be expanded beyond education and employment and delayed marriage. More comprehensive, direct and
content specific strategies to increase
women's autonomy must be sought
simultaneously.
