. The family is the basic unit of society this is because every one is born into a family and nurtured through it. Nevertheless, in a large and culturally diverse society like India, there is no one kind of family. They vary according to their class, regional, geographical and cultural locations. Despite considerable variation in forms of family as well as the norms mediating family relationships such as rules of residence after marriage, lineage, divorce, widow remarriage, inheritance of property, monogamous versus polygamous and consanguineous marriages, families in India have largely ascribed to patriarchal ideologies. In the Indian context, the family is largely located within the caste and kinship systems. These institutions, therefore, become important principles of social organization and analysis. So pervasive is the caste ideology that even the more egalitarian religious of Christianity and Islam have not been able to make an indent into it. The continued hold of caste is largely because of the absence of alternate social security systems caste and kin networks provide individuals with support to meet life's crisis and to celebrate marriages, births and deaths. Women's sexual purity becomes a matter of paramount concern and a mechanism by which the group maintains its boundaries. Such controls of women's sexuality are exerted through the family and kinship. The socialization process seeks to consistently discipline the girl. She is given a low self-esteem, denied knowledge of her body and made incapable of thinking of an independent future, apart from the family.
