1. Discuss the following:-
Art. I.1 of the GATT 1994 provides that: "With respect to customs duties … any advantage … granted by any Member to any product originating in or destined for any other COUNTRY shall be accorded immediately and unconditionally."
Why did the drafters of Article I.1 of the GATT 1994 refer to "any other COUNTRY" and not "any other MEMBER"? What are the main objectives of the MFN principle? (Marks 03)
Discuss the scope of the Most Favoured Nation Principle. (Marks 02)
Discuss the criteria to determine whether two products are "like products"? (Marks 05)
2. Discuss the following:
U.S. President Donald Trump on 23rd January, 2017 signed an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact agreed to under the Obama administration and within a week he signed an executive order to start building a wall at the border. In a response towards such protectionist approach, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said that, "Those who in the 21st century think that we can become great again by rebuilding borders, re-imposing trade barriers, restricting people's freedom to move, they are doomed to fail." What's your opinion in this respect? Write an explanatory note on government's intervention and its types. (Marks 06)
