1. Discuss the following:-
a. According to an article titled, "What was Mercantilism? An ideology (mostly) vanquished by economics' founding fathers" published in The Economist, "Nicholas Phillipson, who recently wrote a biography of Smith, argues that the notion of "free markets" was alien to the father of economics. Smith made it clear that governments would always play a part in making markets and could not conceive of a market where the government did not play a crucial role. The question was not whether, but how much, of a role the state would play."
In this background discuss the instruments of trade Policy (Protectionism). (Marks 05)
b. Write an analytical note on the theory of absolute advantage with its criticism. (Marks 05)
2. Discuss the following:-
a. "The World Trade Organization has 164 members since 29 July 2016, accounting for about 95% of the world trade. Decisions are made by the entire membership through consensus."
In this background discuss the Organizational Structure of the WTO. (Marks 07)
b. Why do countries engage in international trade negotiations and liberalization within the context of multilateral commitments or agreements? (Marks 03)
3. Discuss the following:-
a. According to the World Trade Organization, "in brief, the World Trade Organization is the only international organization dealing with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible."
In this background write an analytical note on the role and main functions of World Trade Organization and its relation with other two Bretton Woods institutions i.e. International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. (Marks 06)
b. Write a descriptive note on the difference between General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1947 and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994. (Marks 04)
