Population ageing has become one of the most important global trends in the twenty-first century. The revolution in longevity and the steady declining fertility rates dramatically raised the number and proportion of elderly all over the world. Since 1950, the proportion of elderly has been rising steadily, passing from 8 percent in 1950 to 11 percent in 2009, and is expected to reach 22 percent in 2050 (World Population Ageing, 2009).

Labelled as Graying Nation, with over seven percent of its population above sixty plus segment, India will carry the bulk. of burden of caring for the elderly population. The elderly population in India has already crossed 100 million in 2010 and is projected to rise to 198 million in 2030 and 326 million in 2050 (Krishnamoorthy, 2010). The life expectancy at birth for both males and females has doubled from 32 years in 1951 to 65 years in 2002 (Singh A.P., 2010).

The breakdown of traditional joint family system, massive employment of women, rapid rates of rural-urban migration and a decline in the pool of youth resources has posed new challenges in the care of the elderly population.
