Ph.D. Programme in Science Technology and Society Studies
Time: 2 Hours Max. Marks: 75
The question paper contains three sections. Read the instructions before answering the questions.
Section Marks: 30
Answer any TWO of the following questions. Each question carries 15 marks. Limit your answer to 250 words.
1. What is innovation? Select any two major innovations of 20th century and
a. discuss their socio-economic, political and cultural impact, and
b. describe the process of the development of knowledge underlying these innovations.
2. Write a critical review of S&T policy in India after independence.
3. 'Science and technology are supported by public funding because of thier potential to yield public good'. Critically examine the statement.
Section -II Marks: 20
Write an essay of 200 words on any TWO of the following topics. X 10 marks)
1. There are two views of IPR. One, IPRs extend monopoly over knowledge, the other, IPRs are the incentives for innovation. Which of these two views would you support and explain why.
2. Universities are supposed to generate knowldeg and industry is supposed to utilize such knowledge to produce useful products. Give your critical comments on University-Industry linkages in India.
3. Over centuries Indian civilization produced knowledge in the area of agriculture, medicine, architecture. Identify the scientific basis of such knowledge in realtion to the contemporary S&T situation.
Section -III Marks: 25
Answer the following questions.
1. Present a note on the conceptual and methodological understanding of the relationship between science, technology and society
2. Formulate a research proposal on the basis of your conecputal understanding, emphasising hypotheses/arguments, methodology, plan of analysis and expected outcome.
