Unit I
1. What are the important rules to be implemented to determine the potential
distribution over the dielectric?

Explain the advantages of liquid dielectric over other dielectrics.

2. What are the challenges encountered when power apparatus are tested against surge
arresters?

3. Explain Townsend's theory of breakdown of gases. Obtain the condition for
breakdown.

Define breakdown. Briefly explain ionization by collision and the factors that affect the
same.

dielectric medium subjected to an electric stress.

Obtain the value of γ at breakdown for a parallel plate electrode configuration under
uniform electric field using Paschen's law, if the gap distance is 1cm, pressure is
760torr, temperature is 300C, when breakdown voltage is 31500V. Consider
B=360/cm.

5. Sketch the arrangement of stage Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier circuit, having
all the stage capacitances of the same value C. Explain.

A ten stage Cockraft Walton circuit has all capacitors of 0.06 micro farads. The
secondary voltage of the supply transformer is 100kV at 150Hz. For a load current of
1mA, find the percentage voltage regulation and percentage ripple.

reasons for providing controlled triggering circuit.

current in the circuit.
