(AUTONOMOUS)
B. Tech VII Semester Supplementary Examinations, May 2018
(Regulations: VCE-R14)
COMPUTER NETWORKS
(Electronics and Communication Engineering)
Date: 17 May, 2018 AN Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 75
Answer ONE question from each Unit
All Questions Carry Equal Marks
Unit I
1. Contrast and criticize OSI and TCP reference models outlining their similarities and
differences.
9M
Explain connection oriented and connection less services. Give the differences between
them.
6M
2. With a neat diagram discuss the Global System for Mobile Architecture. 7M
When a file is transferred between two computers, two acknowledgement strategies are
possible. In the first one, the file is chopped up into packets, which are individually
acknowledged by the receiver, but the file transfer as a whole is not acknowledged. In
the second one, the packets are not acknowledged individually, but the entire file is
acknowledged when it arrives. Discuss these two approaches.
8M
Unit II
3. What is the efficiency of an ALOHA channel? 8M
The following character encoding is used in a data link protocol:
01000111 11100011 FLAG: 01111110 ESC: 11100000
Show the bit sequence transmitted (in binary) for the four-character frame A B ESC
FLAG when each of the following framing methods is used:
i. Byte count
ii. Flag bytes with byte stuffing
iii. Starting and ending flag bytes with bit stuffing
7M
4. Discuss the basic idea behind fast Ethernet. 7M
A channel has a bit rate of 4kbps and a propagation delay of 20msec. For what range of
frame sizes does stop-and-wait give an efficiency of at least
8M
Unit III
5. What is Resource reSerVation Protocol What is this protocol used for? Can
congestion occur when using this protocol? Why? How is it different from normal
multicasting?
8M
A router is blasting out IP packets whose total length (data plus header is) is 1024 bytes.
Assuming that packets live for 10 sec what is the maximum line speed that router can
operate at without danger of cycling through the IP datagram Identification number
space?
7M
6. Explain the Link State Routing in detail. 9M
Explain various network layer design issues.
6M
Unit IV
7. Explain three-way handshake to establish a TCP connection. 9M
Mention the elements of transport protocol.
6M
8. Explain any two performance issues in computer networks. 8M
Write a short note on TCP service modules. 7M
Cont…2
Unit V
9. What is dynamic web document? 7M
Is it possible that when a user clicks on a link with Firefox, a particular helper is started,
but clicking on the same link in Internet Explorer causes a completely different
helper to be started, even though the MIME type returned in both cases is identical?
Explain your answer.
8M
10. Discuss the need for SMTP protocol. 7M
Write a short note on electronic mail. 8M
