Indian Society: Structure Processes (Minor)
Max. Marks: 60 Time Allowed: 3:00 Hrs.
Note: Answer five questions including Question No. 1 which is compulsory. The number of marks
carried by each question is indicated at the end of the question.
1. Answer the following (each answer should be in approximately 100 words): (Marks 2×10=20)
a. Describe the subject matter of four Vedas.
b. Types of Darsanas prevailed in Hindu Philosophy.
c. Polyandrous Family.
d. Meaning of the word "Ashrama".
e. Explain the causes of Exogamy.
f. What are Shad Darsanas and it types?
g. Define Social Ecology
h. Describe the conditions of caste in Post- Maurya Peroid (184 B.C.-606A.D)
i. Describe the impact of Impressive Islamic Values on Indian society
j. Explain the basic theme of Upanishad.
2. "All the movements organized for the improvement or purification of the culture or social
order, this category may be quite appropriately applied to the social mobility movements
among tribal group seeking to achieve a particular status". Explain this statement (Marks 10)
3. The main purpose of marriage is to regulate and control the sexual relationship. In this context
most of the tribal groups follow certain norms as to who one could marry. Explain the various
taboos which are followed in the tribal society. (Marks 10)
4. Even though the caste system was a religious relic, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was insistent on the
fact that religion was an integral part of human life: "Religion instills hope in man and drives
him to activity." However, he gave priority to individual human personality over religious
texts and precepts. Discuss his central ideas in context of caste system in India (Marks 10)
5. Describe the changing structure of caste and its future in the Indian context. (Marks 10)
6. "One of the important issues in the present day Indian context is to discover the space for a
possible theorization in feminism. The articulation of gender relationship provides different
shades in ancient Indian philosophy which act as guides for future relationships between the
genders". Explicate this statement (Marks 10)
