Note: Answer any TWO questions out of three.

1. "The subject of criminology has assumed great importance as the question of crime prevention and the treatment of offenders is engaging the attention of legislatures, jurists and sociologists in most countries. The days when retribution was regarded as the determining factor in inflicting punishment has lost much of its ground in the context of modern and more enlightened views on the functional value of penal law."
In the light of the above statement discuss the nature and scope of criminology as a separate branch of study and also discuss how far criminology is related to other branches of social science. How far you subscribe to the view that criminology is a science? Comment (Marks 10)
2. What do you understand by schools of criminology? State in brief the basic premises of each school of criminology. Also critically examine the contribution of 'Cessare Lombrosso' to criminology. How far Lombrosso's approach is relevant in modern times? (Marks 10)
3. "The sociological theory of criminal behavior pre-supposes that criminals are a product of society. The impact of sociological factors is so great that they either shun criminality or embrace it depending on their environment and immediate social conditions."
In the light of the above statement critically discuss the sociological theory of crime causation.
