Question Paper
Nalanda Open University
Annual Examination 2016
B.Sc. Chemistry (Honours), Part-I
Paper-II
Time: 3.00 Hrs. Full Marks: 80
Answer any Five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
1. Explain the semi permeabl membrane, osmosis and osmotic pressure. Determine the
osmatic pressure experimently by Birrklay and Hartley method. How is osmatic
pressure is related with molecular weight of a solute in solution?
2. What do you mean by relative lowering of vapour pressure? How it is related with
molecular weight of non-volatile substance? Describe oswald and Walker method for
determination of relative lowering of vapour pressure.
3. what is primary, secondary and tertiary amine? How are primary, secondary and
terliary amines are separated from a mixture of these three? Discuss mustard oil test
for primary amine.
4. Discuss any three general methods of preparing carboxylic acids. How will convert
RCOOH into RCH2COOH RCOOH into RH2OH
5. Write the methods of preparation of Thioalcoh and Thioelker.
6. How tartaric acid is obtained from argol on a large scale. Give reaction with
Fenton reagents H9
Ammonical silver nitrate KHSO4
7. Explain the term:
Isothermal change Adiabetic change Reversible process
8. Write two methods of prepration of each Aldehyde and Ketone. How will you
distinguish acetaldehyde and acctune. How acetaldehyde react with:
HCN Phenyl Hydrazine NaOH solution
9. How are urea prepared? How would you identify urea in laboratory? How does urea
react with Hydrazine Nitrous acid?
10. Write short notes on any two of the following:
Electromeric effect Inductive effect Hyper conjugation
