Paper XIX MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

Instructions Question No. 1 is compulsory.
Solve any two questions from 4 and any two from
and 7.
All questions carry equal marks (14 marks).
1. Analyze the following case, identify the problem, provide alternate and justify the
best solution for the same. 14
UDFL manufacturers different types of packaged foods and drinks. The range
consists of more than 50 items and 200 packaging units. The company is popular
and well known throughout the country for its quality products. Some products are
produced and distributed throughout the year, some are produced seasonal but
distributed all the year and some are produced and supplied seasonally. The
company has its processing plants in various parts of the country viz. J MP,
Himachal, Maharashtra and Kerala. It has a wide network of distributors and
dealers who deal with all types of customers and the company reaches over
50000 rural and urban retail points through this network.
The business for UDFL is assured if it produces products as per the demand
pattern. Having established strong distributor network, the success lies in
appropriate decisions in purchase of fruits, vegetables, cereal and pulses
processing and packaging them and dispatching to distributor locations.
The company has a policy to launch at least one new product each year which
has paid rich dividends in terms of its image. The customers look forward and
wait for such announcement and the company uses different advertising media
such as newspapers, hoardings, magazines, sample tests and TV well in advance
for announcing and promoting its new launches. The selection of media is based
on the product positioning in the range and the target market segment.
Inspite of all the above strengths, the company has failed in launching new products
and meets the demand due to inadequate raw material purchases, wastages of
raw material, unavailability of processing plant either due to maintenance or due
to other manufacturing occupancy, etc. It also faces problems of high seasonal
inventory which becomes non-moving or non-saleable inventory if not disposed in
time.
