PHARMACOLOGY I

Write equations wherever necessary.
Essay (3x10=30)
1. Classify cholinergic drugs with examples. Discuss the pharmacological actions of
acetyl choline. Why acetyl choline is not used clinically
2. Discuss the different phase I reactions involved in the biotransformation of drugs.
Explain the significance of enzyme induction, inhibition and pre systemic metabolism.
3. Classify the different types of antihypertensive drugs with examples. Mention one
preferred antihypertensive drug in pregnancy, hypertensive emergency and diabetes
mellitus

4. What is drug tolerance. List the different types of drug tolerance and mention the
mechanisms of their development.
5. Explain the different types of pharmacokinetic drug interactions.
6. Explain the mechanism of positive inotropic action of digitalis. What is the use of it in
atrial fibrillation
7. Mention adverse effects and uses of corticosteroids.
8. Different toxicity studies carried out before starting the clinical trial of a new drug.
9. Mention the principles involved in the treatment of acute organophosphorous
poisoning. Why pralidoxime is not effective in carbamate poisoning
10. Anabolic steroids.
11. Explain the mechanism of action of glyceryl trinitrate. What can be done to reduce
nitrate tolerance
12. Define the term drug dependence. Distinguish between psychological and physical
dependence. Outline the general principles of treatment of drug dependence.
13. Outline mechanism of action of insulin and pioglitazone
14. What are mydriatics and miotics and mention two examples for each. Add a note on
its clinical uses
15. Explain the terms potentiation and additive effect with suitable examples.
16. Enumerate the drugs used in hyperthyroidism. Mention the specific indications for
radioiodine. What is the rationale for using propranolol in hyperthyroidism
17. Explain the mechanism of action, adverse effects and uses of second generation
antihistaminics. Mention four examples for them.
