GENERAL DENTAL PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS

Essay (2x14=28)
1. Define the terms agonist and antagonist with a suitable examples. Explain the
differences between competitive and non-competitive antagonism and give one
example for each. Add a note on drug synergism.
2. Enumerate six aminoglycosides. Explain the mechanism of action, common adverse
effects and therapeutic uses of any one. Define super infection and mention two
drugs causing this.

3. Mention four first line anti tubercular drugs and list two specific adverse effects for
each.
4. Classify NSAIDs based on their mechanism of action with suitable examples.
Explain two uses and two adverse effects of any one of them.
5. Enumerate four benzodiazepines. Mention two uses and explain the
pharmacological basis for any one use. Give reasons why benzodiazepines are
preferred over barbiturates for treating insomnia.
6. Classify adrenergic agonists based on their therapeutic uses with suitable examples.
Mention one use of adrenaline and explain the rationale for the same.

15. Explain how plasma level of calcium is regulated with the help of a diagram.
