Section I
Q.1 Write IS code method formula for the determination of ultimate bearing
capacity of soils. How does it differ from Terzaghi's formula?

A plate load test was performed on a uniform deposit of sand and the
following observations were recorded.
Size of plate was 30 x 30cm. Plot load settlement curve and determine the
load on a footing of size 1.5m x 1.5m can carry safely if the settlement is
not to exceed 50 mm.
Q.2 Describe different types of combined footing with neat sketch. Mention
their suitability also.

Design a strap footing to carry two column loads of 1000kN and 1800 kN.
The centre to centre distance between the columns are 6 m. Size of
column are 500 x 500 mm (1000 kN) and 600 x 600 mm (1800 kN).
Footing area under the columns are Respectively 1m x 2.8m and 2.8 x
2.8m connected by strap. Take SBC 205 kN/m2. Use M-20 concrete and
Fe-415 steel.
