Answer any ONE of the following "questions in about 500 words.
1.
To what extent did the rise of Sramanic sects challenge Brahmanical orthodoxy? Discuss their lasting impact on Indian society.
2.
Elaborate on the notion of 'History' in early India? How is this different from the modern notions ofthe discipline?
3.
Critically comment on the 'urban revolution' hypothesis in medieval northern India in the light of recent writings.
4.
Periodization is a construct that has only limited relevance. Discuss the statement in relation to the question of'medieval' in Indian history.
5.
What are the parameters of "modernity" and "tradition"? How did these concepts feed into indigenous identities taking shape under the influence ofwestern ideas and colonial policies?
6.
What is a 'mass" movement? Critically analyse the Gandhian position on the
participation of the masses in the national movement.
Part A -Section 2 Marks 2 x 15 30
Write short essays of 200 words each on TWO of the following questions.
1.
What are the debates around the decipherment of the Indus valley script?
2.
Did 'Feudalism' in India begin around 300 CE as postulated by R.S. Sharma?
Analyse.
3.
Describe the nature of urban life during the Gupta age.
4.
Critically assess the Deccan policy of Aurangzeb.
5.
How did the bhakti saints subvert the dominant order and to what extent were they successful.
6.
Discuss the religious policy of Akbar.
7.
Why did the colonial' government develop electoral politics? Which communities were targeted and why? How did these communities begin to articulate their political demands?
8.
What were the ideologies deployed by the colonial government in order to control India? Critically develop two such ideologies by which the British justified their rule in India.
