The third great defect of our civilization is that it does not know what to do
with its knowledge. Science has given us powers fit for the gods, yet we use it
like small children. For example, we do not know how to manage our
machines. Machines were made to be man's servants, yet he has grown so
dependent on them that they are in a fair way to become his masters. And
machines are very stern masters. They must be fed with coal, given petrol to
drink and oil to wash with, and they must be kept at the right temperature,
And if they do not get their meals when they expect them, they grow sulky
and refuse to work and blow up and spread destruction all round them.
Already we find it difficult to work or play without machines and a time will
come when they rule us completely.
Being civilized means thinking freely, living rightly and maintaining justice
equally between man and man. If man uses his time and energy which he
gets because of his machines to make more beautiful things, to find out more
about the universe, to remove quarrels between nations, to remove poverty,
then our civilization will surely be great.
In what way have machines become our masters?
Why are machines stern masters?
What is the meaning of being civilized?
How should man use his spare time?
Which word from the passage is a synonym for and give the
antonym for
