The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is an autonomous academic national institution of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India dedicated to research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Allied Sciences & Technology. The Institute has its main campus in Koramangala, Bengaluru and CREST campus at Hosakote, Bengaluru. It operates field stations at Kavalur & Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, Gauribidanur in Karnataka, and Leh/Hanle, Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir.
India has joined the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project, the next generation astronomical observatory that will be located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Indias participation in the TMT Project, led by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP), Bengaluru, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune and Aryabhatta Research Institute for Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital is coordinated by the India TMT Coordination Centre (ITCC) hosted at IIA, Bengaluru. The TMT project is an international partnership between California Institute of Technology (CalTech), Universities of California, Canada, Japan, China and India. The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be the worlds most advanced ground-based observatory that will operate in optical and mid-infrared wavelengths. It will be equipped with the latest innovations in precision control, phased array of mirror segments and laser guide star assisted adaptive optics system. At the heart of the telescope is the segmented mirror, made up of 492 individual hexagonal segments, each 1.44-m in size. Precisely aligned, these segments will work as a single reflective surface of 30-m diameter. India is responsible for providing various critical hardware components and software to the telescope as part of in-kind contribution. Manufacturing of the sub-systems by Indian industry are at various stages.

Qualification : Ph.D in Optics/Astronomical instrumentation with good academic
background.
Experience : The candidate should possess 3 years of post-doctoral experience in Optics
Design/Fabrication/Optical Metrology, Optical/Astronomical instrumentation and a good knowledge in optics. Familiarity with carrying out analytical calculations and numerical computations on Optical/Astronomical instrumentation is essential.
Job Description : The selected candidate will be a member of India-TMT project and will participate in the activities of the group that include production of Indias share of TMT M1 segments/segment polishing. He is responsible for preparation of schedules for various work package, preparation of work package agreements, review of work package agreements, lead and supervises the work package team, develop and maintain the working standards based on best practices, implement new methodology for production planning. A positive performance in this role will lead to increased responsibilities and an opportunity to grow within the project. Job may require frequent travels with in the city and outstation.
Terms & Conditions:
1. The candidates who have already applied against Advt. No.IIA/10/2017/2 need not apply again.
2. The appointment is purely on contract basis and does not confer privilege or benefit applicable to regular employees. No claim whatsoever for regular employment in the Institute shall be entertained.
3. The tenure of appointment is initially for one year, may last till the duration of project and will co-terminate with the project completion. Continuation of contract appointment is subject to (a) requirements of the Project, and (b) satisfactory performance of the candidate.
4. The remuneration indicated is a consolidated and is inclusive of all allowances.
5. There will be annual increase based on satisfactory performance.
6. The date of determining the upper age limit, qualifications and experience shall be the closing date prescribed for receipt of completed applications.
7. Age relaxation is permissible to SC, ST & OBC candidates and also to physically handicapped candidate as notified by Government of India from time to time.
8. The candidates selected will be posted to work in ITCC/IIA, Bengaluru and are liable to be posted anywhere in India as per the requirement of the Project.
9. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility condition, desiring of applying more than one position, must apply separately for each position.
10. Outstation candidates called for interview will be reimbursed to and fro train/bus fare by the shortest route limited to 3 AC railway fare on production of tickets.
11. The prescribed educational qualification is minimum required and mere possession of the same does not entitle candidates to be called for interview. Where the number of applications received in response to the advertisement is large and it will not be convenient or possible for the Institute to interview all those candidates, the Institute reserves the right to limit number of candidates to be called for interview on the basis of qualifications and experience higher than the minimum prescribed in the advertisement.
