Mapping tasks and JD for TURN
The Centre for Urban Policy and Governance (CUPG), of the School of Habitat Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), is looking for a young, creative, self-motivated architect interested in mapping and visual representation for social research, to join an urban research project as a Mapping Expert. The project is called the Tacit Urban Research Network (TURN) and is a collaboration with three other leading Indian organisations involved in urban research Centre for Policy Research (CPR), New Delhi; Hyderabad Urban Lab, Hyderabad; Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS), Bangalore. The collaborative urban research project examines a variety of in/formal practices that constitute the city, focusing especially on the tacit knowledge that holds them together.
Job description
- Primary responsibility: preparing maps, visualizations and presentation material for three different research projects in Mumbai city and region, as well as for other purposes related to the work of the Centre as required with the guidance of faculty members.
- As part of this responsibility, the candidate would be expected to also conduct some primary or secondary research with the guidance of a faculty member.
- Supporting three different faculty projects with their varied mapping requirements, working under the guidance of a faculty member coordinating the mapping work for the entire project.
- Conducting photo and video documentation as required with the guidance of faculty members.
- An important part of the job is to develop appropriate language/s for visual communication of the research being undertaken at the centre.
- The selected candidate would also be responsible for producing materials for an exhibition of the centres research findings with faculty guidance.
Requirements
Minimum qualifications: B. Arch. Preferred: Master of Architecture/Urban Design/Urban Planning.
High level of competence in:

- Autocad mapping and architectural draftsmanship
- b.
- Graphic softwares:
o Photoshop
o InDesign Preferred, high level of competence in:
- o Q GIS
- o Rhino for 3d
- o Freehand sketching
- o Photography and videography with a DSLR camera
Candidates with a demonstrated interest in social research related to the city would be given preference
Experience: Two years of experience in a similar project is preferred. But this condition may be waived at the discretion of the selection committee of the Centre.
A portfolio of work that provides evidence of skills and orientation mentioned above must be submitted with the application through Google Drive in pdf format.
Duration of assignment: 1 year, full time (extendable by a few months as per project requirements).
Remuneration: Commensurate with experience and TISS norms. In the range Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 per month.
Work location: TISS, Mumbai, mainly, and local field sites as required.
