The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is an autonomous academic national institution of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India dedicated to research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Allied Physics. The Institute has its main campus in Koramangala, Bangalore and CREST Campus at Hosakote, Bangalore. It operates field stations at Kavalur & Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, Gauribidanur in Karnataka, and Leh/Hanle in Jammu & Kashmir.
There is an opening for a Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) to work under a DST grant to develop payloads for balloon and space flights. The space payloads group at IIA flies about 6 balloon flights per year with imagers and spectrographs devoted to observations in the near UV and optical. The space payloads group is expected to fly an ultraviolet imager on the Team Indus mission to the Moon and is a part of a team from PES University to launch a sensitive UV imager.
Online applications are invited from eligible candidates for the following position to work under the DST project Ultraviolet Observations of the sky from balloons and satellites at this Institute:

Fellowship: Rs. 40,000/- per month + admissible HRA
Place of work : Bangalore
Qualification : Ph. D degree in Physics/Astrophysics with a good academic background, with at least 60% aggregate marks at M.Sc level. Must have experience with the building and testing of instruments with preference given to candidates with experience in the development of astronomical instruments, including design, fabrication, testing and calibration.
Scope of work: The selected candidate will be involved in the activities of the space payloads group in the development of instruments for balloons and for space flight.

1)The fellowship is purely temporary on contract basis and does not entitle any privileges or benefits of regular employment. No claim whatsoever for regular employment in the Institute shall be entertained.

2)The tenure of appointment is initially for a period of one year and extendable for two more years subject to satisfactory performance of the candidate and requirement of the Institute.

3)The date for determining the upper age limit, qualifications and experience shall be the closing date prescribed for receipt of completed applications.

4)Age relaxation is permissible to SC, ST & OBC candidates and also to physically handicapped candidates as notified by Govt. of India from time to time.

5)Outstation candidates called for interview will be reimbursed to and fro train / bus fare by the shortest route limited to second sleeper class railway fare on production of tickets.

6)The prescribed educational qualifications are minimum required and mere possession of the same does not entitle candidates to be called for interview. Where the number of applications received in response to the advertisement is large and it will not be convenient or possible for the Institute to interview all those candidates, the Institute has the right to limit the candidates to be called for interview on the basis of qualifications and experience higher than the minimum prescribed in the advertisement.
