Advt.IIA/05/2016 dated 13-6-2016

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is an autonomous academic nationalinstitution of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India dedicated toresearch in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Allied Sciences & Technology. The Institute has its main campus in Koramangala, Bengaluru and CREST campus atHosakote, Bengaluru. It operates field stations at Kavalur & Kodaikanal in TamilNadu, Gauribidanur in Karnataka, and Leh/Hanle, Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir.

India has joined the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project, the next generationastronomical observatory that will be located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Indias participation in the TMT Project, led by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP,Bengaluru, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Puneand Aryabhatta Research Institute for Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital iscoordinated by the India TMT Coordination Centre (ITCC) hosted at IIA, Bengaluru. The TMT project is an international partnership between California Institute ofTechnology (CalTech), Universities of California, Canada, Japan, China and India.More details about the project may be obtained from http://tmt.iiap.res.in

The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be the worlds most advanced ground-basedobservatory that will operate in optical and mid-infrared wavelengths. It will beequipped with the latest innovations in precision control, phased array of mirrorsegments and laser guide star assisted adaptive optics system. At the heart of thetelescope is the segmented mirror, made up of 492 individual hexagonalsegments, each 1.44-m in size. Precisely aligned, these segments will work as asingle reflective surface of 30-m diameter. India is responsible for providingvarious critical hardware components and software to the telescope as part of inkind contribution.
