ADVERTISEMENT FOR POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP POSITION

The Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee invites applications from outstanding and enthusiastic researchers for postdoctoral position under the mentorship of Dr. Sumanta Sarkhel focused on Investigation of Earth's Upper Atmosphere using Optical Imaging Techniques.

The prospective candidate is expected to have a strong background in the area of Atmospheric/Space Physics specially related to Aeronomy. Prior experience in working with airglow imagers and knowledge of image analyses using MATLAB or IDL will get an added advantage. The candidate should have experience of working on cutting edge research and should have publications in peer reviewed journals. The selected candidate will work on the newly installed allsky multi-wavelength imaging system (557.7 and 630.0 nm filters) at the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), Hanle, Leh Ladakh (32.78o N, 78.96o E) for the investigation of Earth's upper atmosphere.

Last date for submission of application is 30 November, 2018 (Extended 31 December, 2018). The Department intends to fill the said position by 31 January, 2019.

Minimum Qualification and Experience: Ph.D. in Physics/Atmospheric Physics/Space Science

Candidates who have recently submitted their thesis are also eligible to apply subject to the condition that they will furnish the proof of the award of Ph.D. degree at the time of interview at IIT Roorkee, if shortlisted.

Duration and Fellowship amount:

The duration of the fellowship will be of two years extendable to one more year, if necessary. The candidate is expected to join the Department as soon as offer letter has been released. The fellow will also receive a consolidated fellowship as below in addition with the contingency grant of 20,000/-per annum.

First Year: 50,000/- per month

Second Year: 55,000/- per month

(i) All the postdoctoral fellows (PDF) will be registered as IIT Roorkee students for availing the facilities of accommodation, hospital, medical insurance scheme, computer centre, library, sports etc.

(ii) The candidate called for discussion/interview will be reimburse Bus/Train (2nd AC) fare from their place of residence/work and return by the shortest route within India on production of train/bus tickets of PNR number.

The Department of Physics from its modest beginning in 1960 has now grown in to an active center of quality teaching and research. Today it stands as one of the leading departments in the country, well known for its excellence in teaching and research. The Department runs five year integrated M.Sc. (Physics), two year M.Sc. (Physics) and M. Tech. (Solid State Electronic Materials) programs apart from catering the teaching of core Physics courses to undergraduate engineering students.
