The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) which was established in 1936 is a Deemed University fully funded by the University Grant Commission (UGC), Government of India. The TISS offers several degree programmes in a range of socially relevant inter-disciplinary areas of social sciences. The TISS offers a very challenging but fulfilling academic environment to faculty committed to creating a just society through education, generation of knowledge and field action.

The Centre for Development Practice and Research, Patna which is an extension of the TISS Mumbai was inaugurated in March 2016 for undertaking research, field action programmes and limited teaching. In the last one year, it has made migration a niche area of its academic activities by initiating research projects, a lecture series, an orientation course and publications. Under the broad research area of migration, the following are the priority research segments: a) trends and patterns of migration; b) urbanisation and labour processes; c) Green Revolution and migration; d) popular movements; e) culture; f) child labour; g) caste, gender, identities and processes of formation of subjectivities; h) refugee, citizen and state; and i) policy and governmentality.

TISS invites applications for one (1) position of Post Doctoral Fellow for its PatnaCentre. The post will be filled on contract basis for a period of one year extendable upto one more year. The position carries a monthly fellowship of Rs. 50,000.

The Fellow is expected to undertake research and publication in one or more areas of migration as mentioned above. The fellow may use the opportunity to convert her/his PhD work into a publishable manuscript if that is within the priority research segments of the Centre. The candidate can bring her/his unfinished research work and work towards developing a publishable manuscript. Or, the fellow may take up a new research work under the fellowship. However, in all cases, the fellow is strongly expected to generate a publishable manuscript towards the end of the fellowship. The fellow is also expected to deliver two seminars, and contribute in the academic activities of the Centre including teaching in a course on migration and in setting up a digital archive on migration.

Essential qualification and experience for Post Doctoral Fellow:

Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission relevant regulations.

Applicants should have completed PhD within five years from the date of publication of this advertisement.

Candidates with research experience as evidenced by existing publications or potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals will be given preference.

Interview: The shortlisted candidates will be communicated by e-mail and phone to appear for the presentation and interview to be conducted at either the TISS Patna Centre or TISS Mumbai campus.

Application fee: The application fee is Rs. 500/-which is to be paid online. The SC/ST/PWD candidates will be waived from the application fee if they attach the required certificate to the online application form. The application will be valid only on receipt of the application fee for those who are required to pay. Fees once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.

Other Conditions:

The institute reserves the right to invite persons for interview who may not have applied for as per the above procedure and not fill up the vacancy advertised.

Since applications received may be short listed, merely possessing the prescribed qualifications and the requisite experience would not entitle a person to be called for interview.
