SUBJECT: Paleolithic Archaeology

MONTHLY STIPEND/FELLOWSHIP: Rs. 43,000/- plus relevant research expenses

Postdoctoral research topic & related duties: Applications are invited from Indian nationals to work as a Postdoctoral researcher in the Palaeo-Arch Lab at IISER Mohali under the ISF-UGC-funded project The First Global Culture: Lower Paleolithic Acheulean Adaptations at the Two Ends of Asia.The project is a collaboration between Indian and Israeli colleagues to broadly compare various Acheulean datasets to understand Acheulean technology, behaviour and population dispersals. The methods include fieldwork (in Central India) and experimental archaeology (in India and Israel) in order to study stone-tool procurement, production and use in both regions, and conduct joint workshops - all to arrive at a comprehensive overview of the factors for the similarities and differences in the respective Acheulean records. Project fieldwork may last several months at a stretch. The selected candidate is expected to develop their own specific research topic but which should be related to the overall project. In addition, the candidate will be expected to participate in and assist with project-related fieldwork, lab work, conferences, workshops and so forth. The selected researcher will be mentored by Parth R. Chauhan.

Essential Qualifications:

The applicant should hold a Ph.D. in Ancient History and/or Archaeology or a related subject (e.g. Anthropology) completed within the last five years - and have a strong training and suitable experience in archaeological field and lab methods, with a thrust in Paleolithic archaeology and/or geoarchaeology. The candidate must be able to carry out experimental flintknapping and also teach flintknapping and tool-using methods in a group setting. Basic computer skills and proficiency in English are desirable, along with willingness to work hard and show intellectual enthusiasm.
