Recruitment of one RESEARCH ASSOCIATE for the CEH-PHFI funded research project titled Pesticide Risk Assessment and Mitigation through Community Participation and Capacity Building at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Application of pesticides has revolutionized agriculture and has contributed significantly to enhance food security in India. However, pesticides are hazardous toxic chemicals that can adversely impact human and other animals as well as the environment at large. Unsafe, excessive and indiscriminate use of pesticides is a serious occupational health, environmental and food safety concern in India.
In this background, the main objective of the project is to estimate exposure to pesticides, assess the present risk (health and environmental) in sample population. This will be followed by interventions such awareness generation and promotion of safe handling of pesticides by engaging with the communities. Non-insecticidal pest management practices will also be promoted to minimize the risks from pesticides.
The two year project will be implemented in selected villages of Yavatmal and Nashik districts of
Maharashtra state from June 2018.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide assistance to the principal investigator and research team in preparation of research design and its implementation at the field sites Preparing data collection tools Travel to the field sites and assist the research team in various activities such as conducting detailed field survey Data collection, analysis of data and report writing Assist in conducting meetings with the participating community, training workshops, and project review meetings.
Qualification Criteria and Competencies:
Applicants must be a post-graduate in Social Sciences / Agricultural Sciences / Environmental Sciences or equivalent from recognized institutions. Experience of working with communities and in agriculture sector will be an advantage. Ability to read/write/communicate proficiently in Marathi and English is must. Command on Excel, PowerPoint is essential. The applicant should be willing to travel to field locations as and when required.
Salary:
Consolidated pay for Rs.35000/-per month. Professional tax and income tax will be deducted from your salary as per rules. Your fieldwork expenses including travel, food and accommodations will be reimbursed in accordance to TISS rules.
Duration of Appointment: One Year. The appointment is likely to be renewed for one more year.
