Recruitment for the post of Executive Director for International Climate Monsoon Project Office (ICMPO)

International Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Monsoon Project Office (ICMPO) is being setup at Earth System Science Organization (ESSO)-Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune as a collaborative center by Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi and World Climate Research Program (WCRP), Geneva.

CLIVAR is a core project of the WCRP. It was established based on the decision of the 14th Session of the WMO/ICSU/IOC Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) for WCRP in March 1993 that endorsed CLIVAR as the WCRP project to study climate variability and predictability with a focus on the role of the coupled ocean and atmosphere within the climate system, based on the legacies of the World Ocean-Climate Experiment (WOCE) and Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) projects. The goal of CLIVAR is to improve understanding and prediction of ocean-atmosphere interactions and their influence on climate variability and change, to the benefit of society and the environment.

ICMPO is one of three nodes of CLIVAR and has the responsibility of implementation (1) Intraseasonal, seasonal and interannual variability and predictability of monsoon systems, in close cooperation with the WCRP Grand Challenges on Regional Climate Information and Water Availability and all relevant WCRP modelling and other activities and (2) development of a CLIVAR "Research Opportunity" on links between the monsoons and the crysosphere.

The ICMPO Director is responsible to develop and implement the office work plan in coordination with the CLIVAR SSG, the Directors of the other ICPO nodes and the Director of WCRP(D)/WCRP) or his/her designee through the ICPO Executive Director. He/she is responsible for day to day operation and for fulfilling the duties assigned to this office. She/he is expected to attend the annual meeting of CLIVAR SSG and other relevant events under his/her responsibility. The Director of the ICMPO, as an employee of IITM will report to the IITM Director or his designee on office operation, budget and management. The tenure of Executive Director, ICMPO position will be for two years.

The successful applicant will provide science and administrative leadership of the ICMPO and of the CLIVAR programme. His/her role will be to oversee and manage the implementation of the plans and activities of each of the project elements of ICMPO in support of the overall mission and strategy of WCRP. He/she will maintain active links between CLIVAR and the wider science community stimulating and organizing scientific meetings, workshops and conferences and ensuring the timely flow of information on CLIVAR in general and ICMPO in particular. He/she will be responsible for the management of the Project Office staff budget and operations and for maintaining and developing its funding base.

He/she shall have a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field and considerable experience of working in climate-science. A proven ability in science management including winning external funding is essential and he/she should have demonstrated the ability to conceive, organize and manage interdisciplinary and international science activities and initiate and sustain international cooperation.

The post is currently funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences, through Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. The consolidated salary of the Executive Director would be Rs. 80,000/-per month. Benefits include free housing and health scheme and 8 days Casual Leave and 2 Restricted Holidays and up to 30 days Earned leave per annum. The role will include periods of travel both within India and abroad.
