Information details for submitting application for Chair Professor on

Rural Labour in honour of Late Shri. S.R. Sankaran at NIRDPR, Hyderabad

The National Institute of Rural Development invites application for the Chair Professor constituted in honour of Late Shri. S.R. Sankaran, an eminent civil servant of India and an acclaimed rural development administrator. Shri Sankaran was an epitome of simplicity and commitment to the cause of poor throughout his career and life. His contributions in different capacities have been invaluable for formulating various rural development initiatives in the country.

A. The Objectives

The objectives of Shri. S.R. Sankaran Chair are:

a) Facilitate research in the area of welfare and protection of rural labour, leading to significant publications;
b) To enable the Chair to interact with scholars, political activists, civil society groups in India and to strengthen the knowledge, policies and collective action upon all matters relating to rural labour in the unorganized sector; and
c) To organize Consultations and Workshops to promote greater awareness and collective action in achieving their welfare and upward mobility.

B. Qualifications, Experience and Age for the Chair Professor

Shri S.R. Sankaran Chair Professor should be a person of National/International eminence either from India or abroad who would be able to guide and inspire research, consultations and also initiatives among the academicians, administrators, political parties and civil society groups.

i) He/ She should possess the qualifications normally required for a Senior Professor in a Central Indian University, such as

Academic Background : Ph.D in Social Sciences (preferably in Sociology,

Anthropology, Public Administration, Applied

Economics, Rural Development, Statistics, etc.)

with proven work and publications in the area of

Rural Labour

Experience : Should have at least 10 years experience in the post of

Professor in any University or academic institution

OR

ii) Persons who have done extraordinary work in the area of rural labour.

Age : Not more than 65 years

NB: The prescribed qualifications, experience and age can be relaxed in deserving cases, if found suitable by the selection committee.

C. Consolidated Remuneration

The Chair will carry a consolidated salary which will not exceed the maximum of the salary a Senior Professor in a Central University is entitled to receive i.e. in the range of Rs. 1.10 lakh to Rs. 1.25 lakh per month.

D. Tenure of Appointment

The term of the Chair is one academic year but may be extended to three academic years by mutual consultation. In special circumstances, a short term of six months will also be considered.

E. Facilities to be offered during the tenure

The selected person for S.R. Sankaran is entitled to the following facilities :

Economy class to and fro air fare for the Chair holder, spouse and dependent children will be provided once during the tenure of the Chair Professor.
Free furnished accommodation at NIRDPR campus for the entire tenure. However, recurring costs of the utilities shall be borne by the Chair Professor.
Medical facilities for the Chair Professor, spouse and dependent children will be provided as per NIRDPR norms.
Domestic air-fare for the lectures, workshops and for any other travel connected with the NIRDPR sponsored research and training programmes in the area of rural labour.
A Junior Research Officer will be attached to the Chair for research activities. Similarly, secretarial support also would be provided.

F. Minimum Output Expected

The Chair Professor would be expected to give three or four public lectures on the theme related to rural labour at NIRDPR and its out-reach institutions in the states in India.
During the tenure, he would also organize Consultations and Seminars at NIRDPR and its out-reach institutions.
He would also organize Workshops around ideas presented during his lectures at NIRDPR and its out-reach organisations. These Workshops would promote dialogue and carry the agenda forward.
The Chair Professor is also expected to prepare two or three technical papers or Research Studies in the area of Rural Labour for publication in reputed journals during his tenure.

General :

The Institute reserves the right to relax any of the requirements i.e. age, educational qualification, experience etc. in exceptional cases.
The selection will be at NIRD&PR, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad.
Director General, NIRD&PR has every right to cancel the selection or postpone the selection process without assigning any reason there of.
